Zhongkai University of Agriculture and Engineering is a provincial undergraduate university of higher learning. It is multidisciplinary, promoting development of agriculture, engineering, science, management, economics and arts, while maintaining its focus on agriculture and engineering. It is situated in Guangzhou , a city with a long history and a rich cultural legacy. With an elegant environment featuring green hills, fresh air, and a limpid creek with small bridges across it, the University is an ideal place for academic study.

 

The university, formerly known as Zhongkai Agricultural and Industrial School , was found in 1927. In March 2008, approved by the Ministry of Education, the university is renamed as Zhongkai University of Agriculture and Engineering. In the past 80 years, the university has cultivated a group of talented people, including agro-technicians, experts, scholars, as well as leading cadres at provincial and ministerial level. Among them there are Zeng Yitao, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Chen Yaobang, the former agriculture Minister and Zhang Liangchi, May Day Labor medalist.

 

At present, the university has a total coverage of 275 acres, with the Haizhu campus covering 44 acres, Baiyun campus covering 149 acres and the experimental farm in Zhongcun covering 82 acres. The area of structure in Haizhu campus is 43acres. The area under construction for the first stage in Baiyun campus is 35 acres. The university is recruiting students from eight provinces in the country. The number of full-time undergraduate and postgraduate students totals 9183; the number of part-time students amounts to 3065. The existing teaching and research equipments worth 118,410,000 RMB, averaging a value of 5671.19 RMB for each student. The library has 1,080,000 volumes of books, 820,600 of which are paper-based books, averaging 80.01 volumes for each student. The number of electronic books is 259,300. The number of full text electronic journals amounts to 25,000. Databases for various full text publication totals 16. The campus network is accessible all over the university.

 

Zhongkai Zhongkai offers courses for 45 undergraduate and 4 post-graduate programs through sixteen teaching departments: College of Agricultural Sciences and Landscape Architecture, College of Light Industry and Food Science, College of Computer Science and Engineering, Information College, College of Urban Construction, College of Life Sciences, College of Economics and Management, Department of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, Department of Environmental Science and Engineering, College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Department of Computational Science, Department of Humanity and Social Science, Department of Foreign Languages, Arts and Design Department. The university is also unique in that it serves as a regional centre for IELTS exams and TOEFL as well as the largest IELTS test centre in Asia . Currently it employs 823 staff members, among which 568 are full-time teachers. 112 teachers are doctoral degree holders. 333 teachers are master degree holders. The two groups represent 78.4% of the staff. 11 members are enjoying special government allowances from the State Council. 3 teachers are awarded the title of Outstanding Teachers on the national basis. One is awarded the title of Guangdong Outstanding Educator. 7 are awarded the title of Outstanding Educator in South Canton .

 

Benefited from its geological location, Zhongkai has been actively exploring international academic exchanges and co-operations with other academic organizations in the world. It has established inter-institutional ties with 9 universities from , and . Numbers of foreign scholars from these universities came here to make academic exchanges and to give lectures. In the past 3 years, our university has sent 136 teachers and researchers abroad for
short-term training, education and cooperative research.

 

In order to earn more community support from the society and promote further development, in April 1987, proposed by the country’s Vice President, Wang Zhen and supported by Guangdong Provincial Committee and People’s government of Guangdong Province, the Board of Directors of Zhongkai University of Agriculture and Technology was established, with Vice President Wang Zhen as honorary Chairman and Guangdong Provincial Governor Ye Xuanping as chairman. In 1997, Guangdong Provincial Governor Lu Ruihua was appointed as chairman of the Board of
Directors for the second term of office. In 2008, Guangdong Provincial Governor Huang Huahua is appointed as chairman for the third term of office. Members of the board of directors are state and provincial leaders as well as celebrities fromHong Kong and Macao .

 

The university’s construction and development receive great attention from the country’s leaders and people from all sectors of the society. The list includes Ye Jianying, Deng Xiaoping, Yang Shangkun and Wang Zhen. They have written epigraphs respectively for the in-campus Liao Zhongkai and He Xiangning Memorial Museum, the bronze statue of Liao Zhongkai, He Xiangning white marble statue and the Monument for Liao Zhongkai. Chinese President Yang Shangkun; Liao Chengzhi, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress; He Luli; Liao Hui, Vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference; Henry Ying Tung Fok; Ma Man-kei; Zhou Tienong came in person for many a time to guide and inspect the campus. In particular, Vice President Wang Zhen visited the campus in person for four times. Receiving some much attention from the Guangdong provincial government and the provincial education department and with their support for the growth of the university, the university is developing rapidly in good direction. People of all circles, domestically and abroad, deeply respect and admire Liao Zhongkai and He Xiangning and the cause they opened up. They have been making moral and material contributions that they have made donation to build the Yingdong Experimental Building , a library, the Stanley Ho Gymnasium, and the Tsang Hin-chi Academic Buildings . They also purchased equipments for teaching and scientific research and medical and health facilities and established the Education Scholarship and Award, making their all possible effort to turn Zhongkai into a unique and high-profiled institution for higher learning.
